States’ Fiscal Health Project – The Pew Center on the States

States’ Fiscal Health Project

Although the national recession is over, budget woes persist at the state level. States closed more than $250 billion in budget gaps in 2009 and 2010 alone while confronting historic revenue shortfalls, and they face continued fiscal challenges in the years to come.

The Pew Center on the States helps states understand these challenges, as well as the policy options for regaining fiscal footing. Our work includes daily and weekly tracking of state fiscal news by our team of journalists at Stateline and in-depth research and analysis that compares how states are grappling with budget challenges.

As policy makers and stakeholders work toward recovery, Pew’s research will help them answer the difficult questions: What long-term factors and policy decisions have contributed to their fiscal problems, and how can they avoid historical pitfalls going forward?
