Families Divided: Dateline Nogales | North American Congress on Latin America

It’s a steamy, overcast monsoon morning in Nogales, Sonora, just across the border from the United States. I’ve come to learn more about what happens to Mexican deportees, many parents of children, who are left off by Immigration and …

House Committee Votes to Limit U.S. Leadership Role on Human Rights at U.N. – The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights

In a straight party-line vote of 23-15, Republican members of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs this week passed H.R. 2829, the U.N. Transparency, Accountability, and Reform Act of 2011. Among other things, the legislation seeks to withhold funding for several important U.N. programs and activities and restrict U.S. participation in the Human Rights Council.

Lead Question (s): What should the U.S. policy on immigration to the U.S. be?

We, all of us, even the nomadic NATIVE AMERICAN tribes, can be said to be immigrants.  From the crossing of the Bering Strait to today’s relatively non-contraversial border with Canada and the semantically charged border with Mexico, the ebb and flow of human territorial movements have been the source of war and peace, love and misfortune.  This always relevant and perhaps nation defining topic will continue to ebb and flow in our national consciousness and in all our discussions on:

  • Who is an American
  • What is America
  • What is American’s national vision?
  • What is American’s role in the world?
  • What is our national identity?
  • and so on, and so on…
