THE POLICY THINKSHOP "Think Together"

Public Policy is social agreement written down as a universal guide for social action. We at The Policy ThinkShop share information so others can think and act in the best possible understanding of "The Public Interest."

A client centered healthcare system is useless if we don’t know what the client wants …

Healthcare costs, healthcare reform, disease prevention and lifestyle are all important components of the current healthcare reform.  The common denominator for these and other critical success factors for planners, policy makers and healthcare payers is individual behavior and choice.  Specifically that of the millions of patients who make lifestyle choices that lead to optimal or less than optional health.  For this reason it is imperative that we better understand interpersonal health communication between healthcare provider and patient.  This is an important nexus where a more integrative, client centered and cost effective system can be understood.  Whether you are a health professional, policy maker or patient, health literacy (understanding personal health, the healthcare context for promoting health and how the system can be utilized to promote wellness and prevent disease) and interpersonal health communication can be important communicative contexts to help you engage healthcare reform challenges and opportunities now at hand.

“Effective communication between doctor and patient is a core clinical skill. In interviews with patients, doctors elicit diagnostic information and provide therapeutic advice. Effective doctor–patient communication is associated with positive health outcomes (Mead and Bower 2002; Stewart 1995) such as symptom resolution (Headache Study Group 1986; Starfield et al. 1981), improved general health (Safran, Taira et al. 1998) and physiologic measures (Stewart 1995), as well as with greater consumer satisfaction in different organizational models of primary healthcare services (Safran et al. 1994, 2000, 2002). Studies in many countries have shown that serious communication problems are common in clinical practice (Simpson et al. 1991). Indeed, most complaints by the public about medical services are not about competencies, but about communication. The majority of malpractice allegations arise from communication errors (Simpson et al. 1991).”
